Make the most of your last day in Italy by exploring the historic city of Padua before heading to the Venice Airport. Located west of Venice, Padua is a provincial capital in the Veneto region with one of the most respected universities in the world. Padua has retained her standing as an artistic leader, and we invite you to explore this Italian community steeped in culture and history.
Upon arrival in Padua, begin your walking tour at Prato Della Valle, an elegant oval park on the site of a Roman Theater adorned with a ring of 78 statues of honorary Paduans. Stroll to Piazza del Santo to visit the Basilica of Sant Antonio. The church, with its seven domes and minaret-like spires, has an even more Oriental appearance than Venice's Saint Mark. Built between 1232 and 1307, the church contains the relics of St Anthony and is considered one of the great shrines of western Christendom. In the square, admire the remarkable Donatello's 15th-century bronze statue of mercenary Gattamelata, a masterpiece that greatly influenced sculpture during the Italian Renaissance.
Continue through the heart of the city to see the Bo Palace, the ancient University main seat and famous Caffe Pedrocchi. Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta are two picturesque squares, which are home to the daily markets. View the Palazzo della Ragione, built in 1218 by the Commune of Padua as the seat of Government and Law Courts. Your walking tour will terminate passing by the gardens of the Roman arena, with the Eremitani Church and the Scrovegni Chapel. Your coach will take you to Venice Airport, in time for your afternoon flight.
