Full Description:
Palma de Mallorca, capital of the island, is a city open to the sea and more precisely to the bay from which it takes its name. It is located at the southeastern end of the island and has more than 300,000 inhabitants. Palma enjoys a wonderful climate with an average temperature of 18ºC (64ºF). Tourism is the island's largest source of income. At the beginning of this century, a segment of the European society began to arrive in the city. Palma soon became home to artists and poets who discovered that the island was a place of inspiration.

Your tour begins with a drive along the Maritime Promenade reaching the Bellver Castle. The name of the castle translates as  the "beautiful views". Here, from the exterior, you’ll see one of the most important examples of Gothic civil architecture in Mallorca. Not far from the city center, this castle watches over the port. Jaume II, King of Mallorca, built the castle at the beginning of the 14th century. The castle originally served  as a defensive redoubt and royal residence. However, from the Middle Ages until the end of the Spanish Civil War, the castle became more famous, or infamous, as a prison. Among many others, in 1801 the statesman, philosopher and author Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was imprisoned at Bellver Castle for the next six years. Only four months after Jovellanos was released, the famous young physicist Francois Arago was imprisoned in the castle, charged with being a French spy.

Your next stop will be near the cathedral which presides over the city and frames its silhouette. Constructed between the 13th and the 14th century, it remains one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe.  Adjacent to the cathedral stands the Almudaina Palace. The palace had been converted from an Arab fortress into the residence of the Kings of Mallorca. Your guide will point out the most important aspects of the palace from the exterior.

You will then continue to the bull ring, built in 1929.  The bull ring is a late work of the modernist period, perfectly constructed with four main boxes oriented to the cardinal points.
