Departing from the pier, you’ll stop at the Mausoleum of Theodoric for an exterior view and photos of the tomb.  Theodoric, the famous Roman-Barbarian Emperor endowed the city of Ravenna with power and prestige prior to the arrival of the Byzantines.  Your panoramic tour continues with a glimpse of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo that contains the largest surface of mosaic works surviving in Ravenna. Marvel at the procession of female and male saints, richly adorned with pearls and precious stones, moving towards the Virgin and the Child Jesus.  Take a few minutes to admire the façade of this beautiful church before your coach ride continue towards another jewel in the crown of Ravenna, the Basilica of San’Apollinare in Classe.  This Church was built by Giuliano Argentario on behalf of Archbishop Ursicinus during the first half of 6th century.  Besides its architectonic structure, it is well known for its colorful mosaics and marble sarcophagi of former archbishops along the side naves.  You’ll have free time (approximately 35 minutes) to enjoy the Basilica independently before departing for Ravenna city center.  Your coach will stop at one of the old entrances of the town: Porta Adriana, only 5 minutes walking distance from some of the most important monuments of the city, the Basilica of Saint Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. The Basilica of Saint Vitale is renowned for both its choir and its mosaics.  Nearby in a small chapel is the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, sister of Rome’s last emperor.  You will be given free time (approximately 35 minutes) to independently admire these monuments or sip a cappuccino in one of the numerous cafés of Ravenna before rejoin your coach for the return to the ship.

Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 1 mile over various uneven and cobblestone surfaces with inclines and steps. Guests must be able to negotiate steps on the gangway and in/out of the motor coach. Entrance fees to Ravenna’s monuments are not included in the tour price.  Guests can purchase tickets independently but should expect some queuing at the ticket counter.  Proper attire is required when visiting sacred sites.  Ladies must cover their knees and shoulders and men must wear pants.  Shorts and vests are inappropriate.  On Sunday mornings, church holidays and during private ceremonies, tour groups are not allowed inside the Churches during services.  Guests may have the chance to visit the church independently and reverently. Shops in Ravenna are closed on Thursday afternoons, Sundays, bank and church holidays as well as the 23rd July. Shops are normally open from 0900am to 1230pm and from 0330pm and from 0730pm, some shops may open all the day through. Restroom facilities are located at Sant’Apollinare in Classe.  The order of sights visited may vary.
