Turaida & Sigulda - RG04
This tour will be operated in English only. This tour is a unique chance to get to middle age Latvia. Only 50 kilometers from Riga in the picturesque area of the Gauja river, you will visit the 13th century Sigulda Castle ruins, the newly restored Turaida Castle, old Turaida church, Gutmanis cave and other attractions. Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 3 miles over uneven, dirt paths with slight inclines and several steps. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Depending on traffic conditions, tour sequence may vary but all sights will be seen. The drive to/from Sigulda is approximately 1 hour, dependent upon traffic conditions.
The tour starts by bus from Riga harbor and along the main street takes you a small resort town located 52 km from Riga in a hilly region on the picturesque Gauja River. While driving you will be able to enjoy the evergreen pine trees forest spreading on both sides of the road.
The main attractions are the 13th century Sigulda castle ruins and the newly restored Turaida castle, the old Turaida church, under the old linden tree there is the grave of a young girl - Turaidas Rose - the heroine of a true love story from the 17th century. The fabulous landscape will give the idea of the district, which is called "Latvia's Switzerland."
There is also a sculpture park dedicated to Latvian folklore designed by Latvian sculptor Indulis Ranka and a possibility at the end of the tour and after returning to Riga, to view the sites in the Old Town of Riga. Lunch in a local Latvian restaurant is included.
