Latvian Open Air Ethnography Museum - RG06
This tour will be operated in English only. The tour to the Latvian Ethnography Open Air Museum in a pine trees forest on the coast of Lake Jugla is a wonderful possibility to learn about the history and life in Latvia in the authentic surroundings. You will visit peasants' farmsteads, windmills, wooden churches and pubs from all Latvia's provinces, Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale. The tour will finish with attractive performance of Latvian folk music and dance group.
The Latvian Ethnography Open-Air Museum, founded in 1924, occupies an area of 100 ha with ninety buildings that can be visited. It lies in the outskirts of Riga, about 12 km from the center, in a pine-trees forest on the coast of Lake Jugla.
The territory is divided into four regions - according to the territorial division of Latvia's provinces - Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale. The bus from the harbor will take you to the museum. After parking a walking tour starts.
You will visit peasants' farmsteads, windmills, wooden churches and pubs, built in the period from the 16 - 20th centuries. In the green meadow at Jugla Lake a Latvian folk group will sing and dance for you traditional Latvian folk music (duration of concert approx. 25 min.). After the walking tour you are welcome back to the bus to return to the harbor.
Note: Guest must be able to walk approximately 1.5 miles over uneven paved roads with 2 to 3 steps to enter/exit the coach. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Due to the nature of this tour, it is not recommended for guests with walkers or wheelchairs. Dependent upon traffic conditions, tour sequence may vary but all sights will be seen.
