Experience the Art Nouveau city Ålesund and its archipelago on a leisurely, three-hour kayak jaunt, a great way to get in a bit of exercise while admiring the area’s gorgeous scenery. Your adventure begins in at the kayak center, just a 10-minute walk away from the pier. There, your knowledgeable guides will show you proper paddling techniques and offer a safety briefing. Then it’s time to launch your two-person kayak in the water, enjoying Borgundfjord’s natural splendor as you make your way to the archipelago of Ålesund.

You’ll also paddle to the city, taking in the skyline from the water. Architecturally, Ålesund is unique as many of the buildings are in the Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, style. This is because in early 1904 much of the town was destroyed by a fire. By 1907, most of the town was rebuilt, using the popular style of the time, Art Nouveau. In your kayak, you have a front-row seat to Scandinavia’s most complete architectural example of the Art Nouveau period, in all of its curvaceous, harmonious glory.

• Beautiful archipelago: Glide past the group of islands that make up Ålesund; admire stunning scenery along the way.
• City skyline: Paddle closer to the city to marvel at the amazing Art Nouveau architecture.
• A fresh start: After a devastating fire in 1904, most of the city was rebuilt using the curvaceous Art Nouveau style.
