Explore the last-standing Mayan city before the Spanish arrived, plus discover the fascinating hidden world of the Mayan underground river caverns, where you’ll float along on inner tubes and stop for some snorkeling in an open-air cave.

Mayapan, known locally as Little Chichén Itzá, is about 2.5 square miles (4 square km) and features a variety of structures clustered together in one place. What’s nice is that these ruins are uncrowded compared to the larger, more famous Mayan cities. Plus they’re closer to your ship. And Mayapan is one of the few sites where you can climb to the top of Castillo de Kukulcán. You can even see fragments of frescoes and the reddish color that once covered this striking pyramid.

Then head to Mayan Underground River Caverns, formed during the time of the dinosaurs when a devastating meteorite crashed. Enjoy a relaxing float in an inner tube, marveling at the amazing stalactites and stalagmites you see along the way. Stop for a dip in the crystal-clear fresh waters, or, if you like, don snorkel gear and explore the fascinating world just under the surface. After, tame your appetite with a typical Mayan lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to your ship.
