Peaks, panoramas, pirates — you’ll encounter all of these and more on a half-day, open-air bus tour of St. Thomas that packs in stops at a mountain lookout and historic castle before free time for shopping. Hop in a safari vehicle and head for Mountain Top. Situated 2,100 feet above sea level, this is the island’s highest peak, and while standing on its expansive observation deck, you’ll relish postcard-worthy views of Magens Bay and neighboring St. John. In Charlotte Amalie’s historic colonial district, you’ll be challenged with a climb up the 99 Steps. Built in the mid-1700s, this picturesque stairway (actually 103 total steps) leads to Blackbeard’s Castle. On a self-guided walk around the hilltop bastion, you’ll explore the lookout once occupied by the infamous buccaneer after which the castle is named. Upon descent, you’ll find the world’s largest and tallest amber waterfall, which was built using 1,200 pieces of amber from all over the globe. To round out your adventure, enjoy plenty of time in downtown Charlotte Amalie to shop around one of the world’s most renowned duty-free destinations, where local merchants sell liquor, linens, and local crafts like shell jewelry and carved calabash bowls. You can return to the ship on your own and at your leisure.

• St. Thomas: Enjoy spectacular views of turquoise Magens Bay and surrounding Virgin Islands on this four-hour, open-air bus ride.
• Kongens Quarter: Climb the daunting 99 Steps, explore the 17th-century Blackbeard’s Castle and admire the world’s tallest amber waterfall.
• Charlotte Amalie: You’ll have time to take advantage of this duty-free shopping destination before returning to the ship independently.
