Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Donates Trees, Shrubs And Plants to Wichita's Sedgwick County Zoo
WICHITA, KS - May 10, 2000 - Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. today announced the donation of some 500 trees, shrubs and plants to the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita. The greenery is being donated as a result of the cruise company's 66,000-square-foot expansion of its national call center in southwest Wichita. The transplanted landscape will be part of the zoo's new $1.5 million, 40,000-square-foot, Lions, Warthog, Meerkat and Hunting Dog Exhibit, scheduled to open to the public later this month.
"We're very happy to be able to work with the Sedgwick County Zoo to donate this valuable vegetation," said Mike Semler, manager of Royal Caribbean's Wichita call center. "I'm glad the success and growth of our company is able to help the Wichita community, particularly the zoo's new exhibit."
The donated vegetation will be used to landscape the new exhibit's large rock islands, called a "kopje" (pronounced copy). These rock formations are found scattered throughout the bush areas and grasslands of eastern, central and southern Africa.
Royal Caribbean currently operates a 23,000-square-foot national call center in Wichita. The facility houses 275 employees. The 66,000-square-feet expansion will bring the facility to 89,000 square feet. Construction for the expansion began last October and should be completed this August. The expanded facility will be able to accommodate as many as 425 additional employees, bringing the total jobs to 700.
In recognition of Royal Caribbean's donation, the Sedgwick County Zoo will place a commemorative plaque on the ground of the new exhibit thanking the company.
Royal Caribbean is dedicated to community outreach efforts in Wichita and other communities where it operates.
