CASTLE TOWN
Explore central Japan's unique samurai and industrial heritage in this exciting city that celebrates monozukuri, the art of making things. That includes not only castles, robots and cars but also excellent Nagoya food such as miso katsu, an irresistible breaded deep-fried pork cutlet. Be sure to visit Nagoya Castle, a samurai fortress in a large wooded park, and the Osu Kannon temple market, where religion and commerce create a colourful mix.
SAY ‘KONNICHIWA’ TO KOBE
Kobe has a melting-pot cultural allure that reflects its origins as a 19th-century port city. The city is also all about its world-famous beef, served up by humble street vendors and Michelin-starred chefs alike. Once you've taken in the mountain views and strolled the historic streets, passing mansions once owned by well-to-do foreign merchants, catch a train to Osaka and eat like a sumo wrestler.
CAN'T-MISS FAVOURITES
WARRIOR
Jump into the car and explore the Nakagusuku Castle ruins – the stone walls of former courtyards are what remain today after the structure was defeated in 1458 by an opposing lord. Head south to Yachimun and discover a village dedicated to the traditional Okinawan art of hand-made pottery. Or stop off at Naha city to see famous Shuri Castle and dig into bold fusion food like Taco Rice and other quirky dishes that bear the influence of island's US military base.

ASIA'S URBAN HEARTBEAT
Before leaving Hong Kong, pop over to the island of Macau — you'll need to bring your passport but not a Chinese visa. Check out the island's Vegas-style casinos like the Grand Lisboa, one of the oldest. Inside the Venetian Hotel and Casino, see singing gondoliers and do some shopping. Stroll through Senado Square and the narrow surrounding streets and grab a Portuguese egg tart, the iconic Macau brunch food.
