A City to Savor

Kryssa till Lima (Callao), Peru

One part colonial charm, two parts urban sophistication and a generous dash of gastronomic genius — that's Lima's recipe for being a city with bragging rights. Landmarks rub elbows with trendy bars and restaurants, and museums house treasures ranging from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary sculpture. Travelers cruise to Lima, a culturally diverse capital of 11 million, for many reasons. The city offers century-spanning intrigue for history-loving adventurers, serves up temptations for foodies and even boasts a museum dedicated to gold. During your cruise to Lima, you'll dock in the port of Callao, about eight miles away on the Pacific Coast. After a quick transfer, you'll find yourself in Lima Centro, where the past springs vividly to life amid the pageantry of 16th-century Plaza de Armas (also known as Plaza Mayor). This historic heart of the city was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. Other Lima districts, such as modern San Isidro, offer contrast, while the coastal parks and boardwalk in Miraflores and the street murals of adjacent Barranco add social-media-ready backdrops. Together, they create a buffet of sights, sounds and flavors meant to be savored.

Plaza de Armas is a must-visit, and you'll realize why as you stand amid towering palm trees and admire the Cathedral of Lima, the wooden balconies of the Archbishop's Palace and the baroque-style Government Palace. Peru's president resides there, and a ceremonial changing of the guard occurs daily at noon.

To appreciate indigenous history, visit the Larco Museum, set amid lush gardens in the Pueblo Libre district and featuring pre-Colombian artwork — some of it famously erotic — spanning more than 5,000 years. Or you can enjoy modern creativity at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in trendy Barranco or ogle 14-karat-gold decadence at the Museo Oro del Peru.

Wander and Make a Wish

The eclectic Barranco district is where you'll feel Lima's bohemian vibe. In addition to tucked-away bars and coffee shops and the MAC, you'll find street art, mansions and the 100-foot wooden El Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs). Legend says that if you make a wish and hold your breath as you cross, your wish will come true.

LOCAL CUISINE

Peruvian cuisine is celebrated because of Lima's innovative gastronomy, blending local ingredients — seafood, peppers, corn, quinoa and potatoes — with global flavors, especially Japanese and Chinese. Dishes to try include ceviche (raw fish in a citrusy marinade), causa (mashed potatoes with chili pepper and shredded chicken) and Nikkei, Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, such as sashimi-style fish in a spicy sauce.

SHOPPING

Traditional Peruvian handicrafts are colorful and practical — straw baskets, clay pottery and handwoven sweaters — and in Lima there are several spots to shop. In the Miraflores district, the Indian Market features four city blocks of stalls. The Larcomar mall near Parque Salazar has several handicraft shops. Neighboring Barranco is home to an array of artisanal stores and galleries.
