It is believed that the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, spent the last years of her life in a small stone house on Mount Koressos. Even popes have visited her home and Saint John’s tomb.

Down the hill from St. John’s Basilica, the impressive 14th century Mosque of Isa Bey further flavours this cultural fusion. With its high marble walls, long prayer hall and open courtyard, the mosque is an extraordinary example of Seljuk-style architecture. Serving as both a place of worship and attraction, the mosque enforces a strict dress code. Ladies are asked to cover their head with a shawl and dress modestly, while men should wear long pants.
