From candlelit dinners to sushi with an ocean view, Royal Caribbean goes all-in on culinary experiences. Maybe you're celebrating an anniversary, a birthday, Valentine's Day or just treating yourself to a well-deserved getaway. No matter what the event is, let me walk you through the best cruise food on board Royal Caribbean, and the ones that made our trips unforgettable. As someone who lives for a passport stamp and a delicious meal, I can say this is where vibes meet vacation.
My wife and I are serious foodies. We book the meals before we book the excursions. She’s a pescatarian from New Jersey, and I’m a part-time vegan from The Bronx who still judges places by ambiance and playlists. This guide explores all the different dining vibes on Royal Caribbean ships, along with some excellent food recommendations.
Specialty Dining: Unique Experiences
Specialty Dining: Exquisite Cuisine
Ocean Views and Open-Air Restaurants
Dessert and Late-Night Vibes
No matter what you crave, classic Italian, Japanese, steak or seafood, Royal Caribbean is the cruise line with the best food — and staff deliver every dish with style and class. Each restaurant has superb customer service — very attentive without hovering every few minutes.
All of the decor was thoughtfully curated for each experience. And the views? Imagine looking out into the ocean while cutting into your salmon and staring into the eyes of your partner while the red wine ignites your soul.
Royal Caribbean destinations aren’t the only highlights to remember. The cruise line knows how to turn every meal into a memorable experience. There wasn’t a day that went by that my wife would take a bite, close her eyes and say, “MMM, this is exactly what I was waiting for.”
You’ll find something delicious on every Royal Caribbean cruise. Check out these top spots on each ship for snacks, drinks, dinner and foodie delights:
All ships have the main dining room and a Windjammer Café, but other options differ. Also keep in mind that specific menus can change from ship to ship and sailing to sailing. Make time to taste-test on your vacation!
To understand the top cruise dining experiences, you need to know what makes them special. On board Royal Caribbean ships, there are complimentary and specialty restaurants. The complimentary ones are included in your cruise fare, so you can effectively dine free on board — and there are diverse options to keep everyone in the family happy during your cruise. Specialty restaurants are more elevated, offering sophisticated dishes, upscale environments and experiences you won’t forget anytime soon.
You can purchase a specialty cruise dining package before the cruise, or just book and pay as you go. As a heads-up, make sure to book your reservations in specialty restaurants before you sail or upon arrival, as spots fill up fast. Also, let the staff know when you’re celebrating a special occasion. When I told them it was my wife’s birthday, they brought her a special dessert.
If you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a classic film while you dine, book a table at the Royal Railway — Utopia Station on Utopia of the Seas. It’s not just about the food (though that’s exceptional, too); you’re "traveling" to the Wild West through immersive digital windows. The entire restaurant looks like you’re in a train setting — and the carriage even vibrates.
Sip a themed cocktail while the scenery blurs past and completely lose yourself in the experience. The storytelling is top-notch, and the multi-course menu is as adventurous as the destination itself. You’ll want your camera for this one.
Royal Railway signature dessert: Royal Railway Cigar (a milk chocolate dessert that looks like a cigar roll).
Now, if you’re looking to break out of the norm and have a fun, spontaneous, flirty experience with your partner, Wonderland is just that. As soon as you walk in, you get a menu that you have to “paint” with water to reveal the courses. Our server, dressed like a character out of a fantasy film, guided us through molecular bites, edible bubbles and desserts that looked like modern art.
You’ll definitely want to make room in your phone for photos and videos. Every dish is a spectacle, and we would for sure come back to this restaurant when we get a little one of our own. Make sure to book your reservation for early evening — this is a hot ticket for couples with children and big families.
Wonderland signature dish: Liquid Lobster (lobster bisque served with lobster meat, bone marrow and caviar).
One of the highlights of Utopia of the Seas, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, was great for dinner and a show. The chef was entertaining: He juggled utensils, sang songs and threw food into his hat. I was so filled with wine at this point that I had the time of my life.
We split a sushi platter to start — salmon, tuna, shrimp — all fresh and delicious. Then came the hibachi. My wife had one of their premier combos: sea scallops and lobster.
Izumi Hibachi & Sushi is great for some evening fun — another epic group dining experience with top-tier service.
Izumi Hibachi & Sushi signature dish: Baked Snow Crab and Salmon Dynamite Roll (baked snow crab with salmon, fresh cream cheese, cucumber, tangy citrus and a champagne sauce).
Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar is where you’re going to want to let loose. Picture a cozy evening, a big wooden table, some wine and enough pasta for two lifetimes. If you make any friends on the ship, this would be the ideal place to dine with your new cruise buddies.
I couldn’t help myself — I had to try their margherita pizza. Since I’ve had it in Naples, I’m always chasing that brick oven taste. Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar didn’t fall short. My wife ordered the truffle pizza, and each bite was bursting with flavor. And let’s not forget their starters — I would definitely go back for the meatball and calamari.
Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar signature dish: Traditional Osso Buco (slow-braised veal shanks with creamy risotto).
If you need a bucket-list-worthy experience, Chef’s Table is the one you cannot miss out on. It’s the first class of dining, a five-course gourmet meal in an intimate setting. Each dish is paired with wine by your own sommelier.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne and then given a personal introduction to the chef of the evening. My wife enjoyed the scallop carpaccio while I devoured the roasted branzino. Each dish was meticulously plated into works of art, tapping into all of our senses.
Chef’s Table signature dessert: The World (a chocolate sphere melted in hot sauce to reveal mousse and gelato).
Considering I’m a former New Yorker, I was skeptical about a cruise ship restaurant called 150 Central Park. However, upon walking in, I was transported to the restaurants I remember along the adjacent streets of New York City’s famous 5th Avenue. Some light jazz music, a little foliage scattered nicely within the venue — it felt like a luxury garden party.
My wife ordered the halibut, which was seared to perfection. I went with the beef tenderloin, which did not disappoint. From the amuse-bouche to the dessert, each course felt intentional. Even the bread service had me in a frenzy. If you were there, you might’ve heard, “Could I have more bread?” a few times coming from our table.
This is definitely a date-night moment, so you’re going to want to keep the swim trunks in the room and pull out some nice slacks. For the ladies, this would be the moment for that little black dress.
150 Central Park signature dish: Fried cheesecake (creamy cheesecake encased in a crispy shell).
If you qualify for this dining experience, this is another can’t-miss. Exclusive to suite guests and Pinnacle members, its West Coast freshness meets Mediterranean. We had brunch here and looked out into the sea through the panoramic windows. My wife is spoiled.
She ordered the smoked salmon Benedict on a croissant, and I had the shakshuka. As a foodie who appreciates fresh ingredients, I can safely say it blew all our expectations out of the water. The spiced tomato sauce and feta brought color to my taste buds, and I could never have enough crusty bread.
Coastal Kitchen is another casual moment, great for breakfast or brunch. Get there as early as you can for the best views while you dine.
Coastal Kitchen signature dish: Sea bass ceviche (a fresh, light Pacific coast favorite).
If you’re into lobster rolls and crab cakes, look no further. Matter of fact, if seafood is your thing, just book your reservations at Hooked Seafood for the whole trip! My wife was in her own utopia. An extensive menu of seafood hits and, I can assure you, no skips.
The lobster roll was filled with sweet claw meat on a toasted bun, light on the mayo, but yummy on the taste buds. And the Maryland crab cakes — crispy on the outside, moist and tasty inside, paired with tangy remoulade. Top it off with an all-American cherry pie for dessert, and you’re going to have to set the alarm to wake up after your dinner nap or you’ll be opening your eyes to sunshine the next day.
Hooked Seafood signature dish: Captain’s Platter (a combination of lobster tail, fish filet and shrimp).
El Loco Fresh is your go-to for quick bites by the pool. Think tacos, nachos, guacamole and unlimited salsa. You’ve never had pork tacos like these on any other cruise in your life. Grilled to perfection, juicy and all the right flavors coming from its sauce. They also have breakfast burritos and an insane chocolate dulce de leche for dessert.
El Loco Fresh signature dish: Carnitas burritos (tender and pork carnitas with customizable fillings wrapped in a fresh tortilla).
Appease your inner child at Sugar Beach. It’s the theme park of desserts. We built our own sundaes — hers had strawberry sorbet and gummy bears, mine was ice cream with huge chunks of cookie dough. Our evening was a wrap after breaking every diet rule imaginable in this fun-filled dessert haven.
Sugar Beach signature dessert: Sundaes (you can get as creative as you want).
After an early dinner, we planned our itinerary for one evening to stop by Vintages. It was great to be around other adults who just wanted to chill and keep the kids away for a grown-up and sexy vibe. They have a wide selection of red and white wines. My wife and I shared some tapas and caught up on some of our responsibilities while being away. Making sure we paid our bills so the lights would be on when we made it back home.
It’s a casual moment, but I recommend going after dinner from 150 Central Park, or treating it like a pre-game before some after-hours activities.
This is the perfect wind-down spot for a casual late night. Big screens, wings, sliders and a great beer list. We caught the game, split a basket of loaded nachos and toasted with pints. Not romantic in the traditional sense, but for us? If there’s a big game during your cruise vacation, make sure whoever’s in charge of the itinerary knows that you’re going to want to be at Playmakers Sports Bar that evening.
Playmaker’s Sports Bar & Arcade's signature dish: Playmaker's Burger (double all-beef patty and a house-blend sauce).
