10 Best Oahu Family Vacation Ideas

Family Vacation Ideas in Oahu Will Wow You

Oahu is the family-friendly gateway to the beautiful Hawaiian islands. Direct flights from a variety of mainland cities welcome visitors with aloha and the smell of tropical flowers in the air. At first glance, Oahu might look like a bustling big city with a pretty backdrop, but there are loads of family-friendly ways to experience Hawaii’s culture on a pre- or post-cruise visit to this beautiful island known as “The Gathering Place.”

The Gathering Place Gets Families

Perhaps more than any other Hawaiian island, Oahu offers family-friendly activities with a pop of Polynesian perfection. When you venture out to such a special place, you’ll want to make the most of the journey by adding on a few fabulous days of pre-or-post Oahu cruise exploration. Oahu’s slightly more commercial nature than other islands in Hawaii makes it an easy destination where anything you need or forgot to pack is available. Budget-friendly local food stops and casual chain eateries offer a pleasant price point to enjoy the flavors of the islands. “The Bus,” or an extensive island trolley system hitting tourist-tempting spots, provides rental-car-free transpo, saving little legs from tiring before arriving at the fun.

Although the reputation for massive world-class surf is well-earned, there will always be a side of Oahu where the waves are perfect for “keiki” kiddos or newbie surfers and boogie boarders. In the winter, waves are wailing in the north — a day spent admiring the skills of local surfing legends is a worthy excursion — while calm in the south along Waikiki. Despite a bit more development along its verdant hillsides, Oahu marine life is plentiful, with ample affordable activities to explore the underwater wonders when compared to less populated islands.

10 Best Oahu Vacation Activities for Families

Building in beachtime and adventurous activities is the hallmark of planning a fun family cruise vacation. Add a pop of paradise with a pre- or post-cruise add-on of time in Oahu, where “ohana” opps abound. Classic kid heaven with a hint of Hawaiiana can be had at Honolulu Zoo or the Waikiki Aquarium, or try some of these top ten tips to add a big splash of awesome to your family’s bucket list.

1. Snorkeling Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay State Park has been a protected marine life conservation park for almost 60 years. Formed within a volcanic cone on the southeastern side of the island, the bay is home to countless marine creatures, and the beach has been voted best in the United States. To ensure the reef stays pristine, all visitors must reserve their slot to enter, watch a nine-minute video outlining the life in the bay and rules installed to keep those creatures safe and agree to refrain from touching or walking on the delicate coral reefs.

2. Polynesian Cultural Center

Six island villages representing Polynesian nations create an authentic immersive experience with hands-on experiences, performances and engaging demonstrations of each unique culture. Polynesian Cultural Center packages include self-directed access to the villages with a canoe tour, and you can enhance the adventure with add-ons up to premium seating for the nightly luau buffet and “HA: Breath of Life Show” with a private guide.

3. Surf Lessons

Surfing is an integral part of the culture of Oahu. Many of the world’s greatest talents ride the monster waves of the North Shore in competitions and for pure love of the sport. Most lessons last around two hours, in which instructors teach even the most inexperienced riders to paddle, understand the gear and usually ride a few small waves by entering the water with their charges to help propel the board for enhanced balance. Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience, founded by the 2024 Surfing Hall of Famer who grew up near Oahu’s famous Banzai Pipeline, offers a private ohana lesson for the whole fam on the North Shore or Waikiki.

4. Sunset Sails

Catamaran cruising the coastline as the Hawaiian sky deepens to orange-streaked pink is magical. Add in potent tropical fresh fruit juice drinks and views of the stunning Oahu volcanic mountains and Diamond Head — could it get any better? Pink Sails Waikiki says hold my mai tai, offering a December 15-May 15 combo sunset sail and whale watch experience combo for happy humpback aloha ‘til the sun goes down. Catching the whales is no fluke; some visitors to the island choose their trip timing for when these gentle giants wander its waters.

5. Pearl Harbor Experience

Visiting this important piece of American history is a must for any Oahu visit. Both educational and emotional, Pearl Harbor is a place of reflection and remembrance. (Military visitors are welcome to wear civilian attire; battle dress uniform is not allowed on the memorial.)

The full experience includes multiple interactive elements, on-site vessel tours, museums and a boat ride to the memorial.

● USS Arizona Memorial.
● Battleship Missouri.
● USS Bowfin Submarine.
● The Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.
● Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
● Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

6. Luau Dinner and Hula Shows

A visit to the Hawaiian Islands should include cultural experiences to understand the local heritage. A luau isn’t a cheesy theme park experience; the talented local performers share their history with a combination of art, music and singing/chanting. There are also delicious local delicacies, including an underground “imu”-cooked Kalua pig wrapped in banana leaves over hot lava rocks, lei-making floral creations and of course hula and Hawaiian dance. The Mauka Warriors Luau in Kapolei and the KA WA’A Luau in Ko Olina are two highly rated options.

7. Scuba Diving and Discovery Scuba

Scuba diving in Oahu is a wonderful way to wander the underwater world. Never slipped below the surface? A Discover Scuba experience is a quick way to try it out.

One might think bubbling under the skyscape of a major city could affect the sites. However, visibility is still excellent, the water is relatively warm and full of life. On my Shipwrecks and Coral Reefs dive with Waikiki Dive Center, I spun in a circle at one point, spotting multiple sea turtles, a friendly reef shark, an octopus, a moray eel being attended to by banded cleaner shrimp and schools of colorful tropical fish — all within 30 feet of my position. Another cleaning station boasted six to 10 green sea turtles patiently waiting their turn. Waikiki Dive Center is a Five-Star PADI shop with excellent gear, guides and a location so close to the port that makes it possible to even do a dive the morning of embarkation for a Hawaiian Island cruise.

8. Kayak or SUP with Sea Turtles

The best way to commune with the shelled set is to approach them gently on non-motorized watersport toys such as kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. Try Kailua Beach Adventures in Kailua, Sea & Board Sports Hawaii in Haleiwa on the North Shore or Turtle Canyon in a nature preserve in Honolulu for rentals or guided wildlife spotting tours.

9. Hiking Diamond Head

Hiking Diamond Head is an iconic activity for the adventurous visitor, so much so that to preserve the pristine and beautiful (very steep) trail, Oahu has instituted a reservation system with a nominal fee for out-of-state guests. Book your slot and take the 1.6-mile sunny experience for 1.5 to 2 hours of amazing coastal views. Avoid crowds and excessive heat by hiking early in the day.

10. Ala Moana Center

It seems odd to place a shopping center on a must-do list for Oahu travelers, but a well-curated assortment of 50+ artisans and local creators share their wares amidst the tony shops seen in upscale mainland malls. The open-air Ala Moana Center is the largest in the world, with 350 shops and 150 dining options. It’s all combined with daily live hula or local entertainment and family fun spots like Jungle Fun Island, Dave & Buster’s Honolulu, The Escape Game Honolulu, Lucky Strike Honolulu and Ala Moana Centerstage

“Ono” Eats and Sweet Beach Treats

The undisputed ode to “ono” on Oahu (translation: delicious!) would have to be the fabulous fresh fish appearing everywhere from casual tacos at beachside shacks and food trucks to tasting menus at top fine dining establishments. Culinary is culture, so belly up to a plate of “pupus” or sweet treats of note before or after your Hawaii cruise.

● The best Hawaiian Shave Ice is a tight race — Baldwin’s Sweet Shop, Island Vintage, Aoki’s or Haleiwa Town Shave Ice — but do slurp this snowcone on steroids (consider azuki beans, sweet condensed milk or ice cream add-on).
● For big grinds on a bitty budget, try a “local plate lunch” at Yama’s Fish Market or Loco Moco Drive Inn. Even ABC Stores, a cultural phenomenon, often has a deli which serves up heaping platters of local favorites on the cheap.
Monkeypod Kitchen by Chef Peter Merriman in both Ko Olina and Waikiki is the perfect spot for happy hour or a lively dinner accompanied by local live music.
● For a great time, drop into the Barefoot Bar at Duke’s Waikiki or head to Hula Grill with its stellar view of Diamond Head. TS Restaurants source from local providers, sharing 50 years of aloha with a fan base as big as their Hula Pie.
● James Beard Award-Winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi’s original Hawaii Kai outpost serves up Roy’s scintillating signature dishes with a beautiful beach view. Anything Roy touches is inspired and infused with heart and love for local products, so whether the Goen Dining + Bar in Kailua, Eating House 1849 Waikiki or Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi, a meal at Roy’s is one to remember.
