Royal Caribbean® has operated in Mahahual and southern Quintana Roo for decades, bringing guests to the region, supporting local businesses and growing alongside the community. As the new owner of the Port of Costa Maya, we remain committed to practical actions that support responsible growth, environmental stewardship and quality of life in the surrounding region.
We are listening closely, working with local leaders, public authorities and experts, and staying focused on what matters most: supporting a responsible long-term vision that benefits Mahahual and the region.
We believe the best vacations leave a positive impact across incredible destinations. And through SEA the Future — our commitment to delivering these experiences responsibly — we care for the environment, support the communities we visit and call home, and partner with local leaders and organizations to create opportunity, celebrate culture, strengthen local economies and help people and places thrive.
Royal Caribbean is supporting practical community priorities in Mahahual, including the future Mahahual K’iin Community Center. The plan includes relocating the center to a larger, more accessible location, adding spaces for community programming, sports and local gatherings, and inviting residents to help shape the center’s future through a community vote and ongoing programmatic working groups.
Environmental care is a key part of Royal Caribbean’s work in Mahahual. The company’s current approach includes listening to the community, working with local and technical partners, and supporting initiatives tied to coastal resilience, responsible tourism and sustainable sargassum management. These efforts are intended to complement, not replace, applicable government oversight and environmental requirements.
Mahahual sits along the Mesoamerican Reef, a remarkable coastal ecosystem. Royal Caribbean Group is committed to supporting conservation efforts and wildlife protections that help these natural systems continue to thrive — including recently changing lights at the port to help protect sea turtle nesting.
Royal Caribbean Group has committed to supporting long-term sargassum cleanup and responsible management along the Mahahual coastline as part of its broader environmental work in the region. These efforts are intended to help protect beaches, support local livelihoods and strengthen coastal resilience, while coordinating with local leaders, authorities and technical partners to use methods that respect coastal habitats and the tourism economy.
Local businesses, suppliers, tour operators and entrepreneurs are important to Mahahual’s tourism economy. Royal Caribbean’s community engagement approach, including working groups connected to the community center and sargassum pilot program, is designed to keep local voices involved and help identify practical opportunities that support residents, businesses and visitors as work in the region continues.
Royal Caribbean is listening to Mahahual in many ways, from local town halls and small-group conversations to direct meetings with residents, businesses, community leaders and environmental partners. We have also supported beach cleanups and helped create a sargassum working group so local voices can help shape near-term and longer-term solutions. We will continue to stay connected through community updates, focused working groups and other regular opportunities for people to share feedback and be part of the process.
Public beach access is protected under Mexican law, and we will uphold that. We will continue working with local authorities and the community to keep Mahahual welcoming and accessible for residents and visitors.
