Beaches and Swimming in Mexico and The Bahamas

Beaches and Blue Holes of The Bahamas

Glowing white shores, aqua seas, sand spits and beach clubs — that’s The Bahamas. Even in Nassau, you’re never far from a gorgeous place to tuck your toes in the sand. Long Island’s 663ft deep Dean’s Blue Hole hosts the international Vertical Blue Free Diving Competition. Its sugary sand is so fine that someone walking along the beach triggers an underwater sand waterfall.

The island chains of the Exumas, Eleuthera and the Abacos are beach-heavy wonderlands. The Exumas alone boast 365 beaches — a piece of paradise for every day. It’s no surprise Royal Caribbean picked The Bahamas for Perfect Day CocoCay! Take beach pics, but be prepared to defend your lack of filters — they seem too pristine to be real.

Royal Beach Club℠ Paradise Island has everything you need for an idyllic island beach escape. Belly up to The Floating Flamingo, the world’s largest swim-up bar and visit action-packed pools in Party Cove℠, Paradise BeachSM and Chill BeachSM.

● Two pristine beaches.
● Endless island eats.
● Nonstop DJ beats..
● Unlimited drinks..
● Included Wi-Fi..
● Umbrellas, loungers, lockers and towels.

Mexican Coasts Cater to Beach Lovers

”Excelente” Caribbean beaches include a cove below the Tulum ruins. Take a refreshing dip, worth the 30 wooden-stair trip. Enjoy Playa del Carmen to Cancun’s string of perfect “playas.” On our last visit, we watched a loggerhead sea turtle lay her eggs and donated to “adopt” the nest through the Sea Turtle Conservation Program at Le Blanc Spa Resort. When the eggs hatched two months later, we received an adorable video of the hatchlings scrambling for the sea.

Surf’s up on the Pacific side of Mexico. Sleepy Sayulita is a charming surf town south of Punta Mita. The famous arch at Land's End in Cabo San Lucas is adjacent to back-to-back beaches of Lover’s Beach, facing the calm Sea of Cortez, and photogenic Divorce Beach, facing the rugged Pacific (and too dangerous to swim). They can only be reached by boat from lovely Médano Beach, downtown Cabo’s two-mile white sand crescent. Puerto Vallarta is home to lively Playa Los Muertos, tranquil Conchas Chinas and boat-access-only Yelapa.

Riviera Maya cenotes are unique, can’t-miss experiences. These underground caverns are crystal clear, filled with spring water from an interconnected underground river system. The region’s natural sinkholes number in the thousands. Dos Ojos Cenote Park rents snorkel gear to admire the stalactites and stalagmites. My family loves the more natural Cenote Multum-Ha, Cenote Choo-Ha and Cenote Tamcach-Ha with its jumping platforms for 15-30-foot leaps, near the Coba Ruins.

Activities and Things To Do in Mexico and The Bahamas

Mexico Activities

Mexico has remarkable Mayan ruins and cenotes, thought to be sacred portals to the underworld. The jungles are rich with wildlife. When we lived in the Riviera Maya, coatis, monkeys, parrots and iguanas were daily guests.

We tried three of the Xcaret parks (Xplor, Xavage, Xenses), which gave my family serious wow moments. Otherworldly experiences met extreme nature adventure with a dose of local culture. We were blown away by jet boats, monster trucks, white water rafting, UTV rides and even a sensory deprivation trail.

If you want even more adventure, spend unforgettable together time in Mexico with these activities:

● Snorkel in cenotes.
● Explore Mayan ruins.
● Monitor turtle nesting/hatching.
● Experience world-class scuba drift diving.
● Swim with whale sharks.
● Boat to the Land's End arch and sea lion colony.
● Try Thalassotherapy with ancient indigenous spa treatments.
● Learn about cacao in a chocolate-making workshop.

Things To Do in The Bahamas

For families, friend groups and couples, Atlantis Paradise Island Resort represents one of the most engaging things to do in Nassau. Splash out on Atlantis-themed Aquaventure water park, with 20 million gallons of thrills and chills across 141 acres. We couldn’t get enough of the anything-but-lazy, mile-long Rapids River filled with white water, drops and swirls. Tubing through the shark habitat in a plexiglass tunnel was another H2’whoa!

Over 20 impressively themed swimming areas border The Dig, a stunning, immersive Lost City aquarium with over 250 marine species. Dolphin, sea lion and macaw encounters support the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation. The resort boasts several celeb chef eateries. We had the most incredible meal at Fish by Jose Andrés, where we defended the Bahamian reefs with our forks, enjoying a delicious (and incredibly destructive) invasive lionfish caught by a local father-son fishing team Chef Andrés befriended.

Bond bolder in The Bahamas with your crew:

● Dive with sharks: Meet tiger, hammerhead and lemon sharks in/out of a cage.
● Swim with pigs: Visit Pig Beach from Great Exuma; your socials will go hog wild.
● Snorkel Clifton Heritage National Park: Swim in an underwater sculpture garden.
● Snorkel Thunderball Grotto: Admire marine life in an Exuma underwater cave.
● Spelunk Lucayan National Park: Explore a large, underground cave system.
● Visit historic sites: Tour Queen’s Staircase, Fort Charlotte and Parliament Square.
● See Bimini Road: Snorkel the mysterious, Atlantis-linked underwater formation.

Food Finds and Culinary Culture

Mexican Food Favorites

Mexican specialities are cooked into the culture, such as a cocoa-spiked “Mole Madre,” mother sauce continuously fed for over 2,500 days. Practice “sobremesa” post-meal mingling and lingering in good company. Día de los Muertos altars are even adorned with the deceased loved one's favorite dish.

On the west coast, try Baja-fresh Kumiai, Chingón and PaiPai oysters and aguachile, a lime-marinated shrimp with chili. On the Caribbean side, nosh slow-roasted Cochinita Pibil pork marinated in earthy achiote paste and perfectly-ripe half avocados filled with achiote-citrus shrimp.

The Bahamas Food Scene

The best of The Bahamas’ bites are conch fritters, flying fish sandwiches and peppery tacos made from today’s catch. Bahamian “stew fish” simmers grouper or snapper in a rich tomato-onion sauce, accompanied by salt-pork-dotted peas and rice. Breakfast on spicy, savory Chicken Souse soup, served with a johnnycake.

The famous all-day Fish Fry on Arawak Cay is a 10-minute walk from town. Evenings get extra lively. Bring cash, as the family-owned shacks that rep the best of Nassau noshes don’t take cards.

Mexico vs. The Bahamas: Bars and Nightlife

Mexico is home to big-scale dance clubs and discos thumping away in beach cities like Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. You’ll also find breezy beachfront bars, modern craft cocktail cafes and tequila tastings on every corner of any tourist area.

The Bahamas swings to a laidback vibe, with beachfront tiki bars, waterside haunts and fish fry spots where coolers of chilled Kalik and Sands wait for thirsty revelers. Nassau’s John Watling's Distillery gives free tours and tastings of small-batch, Bahamian-made rum at a historic 1789 estate. (Hint: It’s within walking distance of the cruise port!)

Big Budget and Vacation Values

Mexico cruises and vacations on both coasts offer great travel value. You can find tours, restaurants, taxis and lodging for a fraction of the cost of pricier Caribbean islands, while enjoying the same tropical paradise vacation vibes. There are luxury resorts, but they can often be booked for the same rates as basic properties elsewhere.

Mexico delivers for families looking to stretch their budget and friend groups who want to say “Si!” to “playa” parties without a “grande” bill.

The Bahamas is home to loads of high-end luxury resorts, all-inclusive properties, shiny casinos, stylish nightclubs and celebrity restaurants. The quaint inns and B&Bs on outer islands require an extra plane trip, negating any big savings. The island chain offers an easy escape from East Coast metropolitan cities, earning high dollars from travelers looking for quick recharge getaways.

The Bahamas hosts upscale bridal or groomsmen celebrations with friend groups, destination weddings and honeymoons or romantic getaways.

How to Plan Your Trip to the Bahamas or Mexico

Seasonal weather is an important consideration when you plan your cruise or land-based vacation. If you plan on enjoying water-based activities such as snorkeling, diving and swimming, Mexico has warmer temperatures above and below the surface, particularly in winter.

The Bahamas can experience cooler temps and windier conditions from December through February. Early-to late spring highs are milder and more comfortable than you will find in Mexico’s steamy jungle terrain.
