Very few of these still exist today, but the ones that still stand strong are popular cruise destinations.

It isn't the world's longest or steepest canyon (though it is, impressively, over a mile deep). But it's historically recognized as the largest, which is why it holds a place on the current natural wonders list. It's also considered by many visitors to be one of the most beautiful places in North America. The vivid colors of the canyon's exposed rocks and its sheer size make it feel like an otherworldly landscape. Experiencing it firsthand is easy, thanks to plenty of lookouts, tours and activities geared toward visitors. You can drive to the Skywalk Bridge at the canyon's West Rim and peer at its gorges through the bridge's glass floor. Or, cruise through it on a rafting tour along the Colorado River — the options are endless.

Snorkel Or Scuba Dive In The Great Barrier Reef

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system — a distinction that earned it a spot on the Seven Natural Wonders list. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this sprawling expanse encompasses 133,000 miles, comprises more than 2,900 distinct reefs and 900 islands, and supports one of the world's most diverse ecosystems. It's so big that it can even be seen from outer space.

While perhaps not as easy to get to as the Grand Canyon, it’s still accessible to visit the Great Barrier Reef via diving, snorkeling or kayaking tours. Most visitors start their adventures on dive boats departing from Port Douglas, Townsville, Cape Tribulation, Cairns, or even during a relaxing cruise to Airlie Beach, Queensland. If scuba diving isn't quite for you, you can join a snorkel or kayak tour — several set out from Master Magnetic Island, a small isle just off the coast of Townsville. But the best way to experience the reef is indeed underwater. Some of its residents include manta rays, blanket octopi, giant clams, and even humpback whales.

This is the only one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World not tied to one geographical location. The Northern Lights offer plenty of options to be seen worldwide. One of the best ways to view them is to explore Alaska by cruise, and the trick to seeing them is to time your visit right. This naturally occurring phenomenon, also known as the aurora borealis, appears as dancing bands or curtains of colored light in the sky. The aurora is caused by electrically charged particles that blow into our atmosphere from solar storms, so it's difficult to pinpoint exactly when or where it will appear. But research has shown your chance of catching the northern lights is best at certain times of the year in remote, northern places where skies are dark and light pollution is minimal.

Denali National Park in Alaska is a prime spot, especially in the fall, winter and early spring when the nights are longest. Its local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means "smoke that thunders." It accurately describes the power of the silvery water as it crashes down hundreds of feet into the Zambezi River below, creating massive billows of mist. Two national parks in neighboring countries protect this spectacular site — the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and the Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe. Since Victoria Falls is near South Africa, many travellers combine trips to see multiple regional sites. As most world travelers would note, you can access the falls through either side on foot or from the air on a helicopter or microlite tour. It's also not uncommon to spot elephants and other local wildlife while viewing the falls from above, so keep an eye out. Today, it stands between 9,100 and 10,300 feet. It's been dormant since 1952 and is classified as extinct by scientists. Paricutin is still hot, though, and its cone emits steam caused by seeping rainwater that reacts with its heat. The volcano's crater currently stretches about 660 feet in diameter, and you can even summit Paricutin. Round trip, it's a 12-mile journey that can be made on horseback or on foot, though the hike is very strenuous. Those who make the effort to summit the Paricutin trek past buried village homes, lava fields and a church.
