Tokyo (Yokohama), Japan

Yokohama is the central gateway to exploring Tokyo, a once-humble fishing village that is now one of the world's biggest, most densely populated cities. You'll find an eclectic mix of traditional shrines and soaring skyscrapers lining these neon-lit streets. Walk the Rainbow Bridge over Tokyo Bay alongside the Yurikamome Rail Line, a futuristic, operatorless train system. Then, see old Tokyo at the Imperial Palace, an Edo Castle surrounded by moats and gardens perfect for strolling. Cruise to Tokyo and head to iconic Sensoji Buddhist Temple and pass below the massive red paper lantern of the Thunder Gate. Then, unwind in Yoyogi Park, a literal forest in the heart of the city, complete with Zen gardens and a gingko tree forest.

Mt. Fuji (Shimizu), Japan

NasjonalspråkJapanese
Gyldig valutaJapanese Yen
Mt. Fuji sightseeing is the name of the game in Shimizu. If there are no obscuring clouds, head to Miho-no-Matsubara, an emerald green pine grove next to the ocean, backdropped by the soaring volcano. Spend the rest of your time picking tea in the tranquil countryside, or indulge in the freshest sushi at the Shimizu Sushi Alley in S-Pulse Dream Plaza.
Reisetips
1
From October to November there is an international street performers competition in the center of town called the Daidogei World Cup.
2
You can get almost anywhere by public transport. Both trains and buses are reliable and safe.
3
Check the cloud forecast in advance to know if Mt. Fuji will be visible on the day you get into port.

Kobe, Japan

NasjonalspråkJapanese
Gyldig valutaJapanese Yen
Kobe has a melting-pot cultural allure that reflects its origins as a 19th century port city. The city is also all about its world-famous beef, served up by humble street vendors and Michelin-starred chefs alike. Once you've taken in the mountain views and strolled the historic streets, passing mansions once owned by well-to-do foreign merchants, catch a train to Osaka and eat like a sumo wrestler.
Reisetips
1
You don't need to tip in Japan — save some cash (and an awkward moment) and only pay the amount of your bill.
2
It's easy to walk around Kobe, but if you want to speed things up, you can find a reasonably priced taxi rank at every train station.
3
If you find Kobe beef a bit pricey, go to the restaurants at lunchtime, when the meals are often cheaper.

Soak in the mix of history and scenery that is Kagoshima. Stroll through a samurai garden overlooking the sea at Sengan-en. Fill up on local korubuta pork, then finish your day with a memorable view of the city and the volcano in the distance at Shiroyama Lookout.
Reisetips
1
There's no tipping in Japan, but you'll face an 8 percent sales tax everywhere except major retailers, which often have no-fee shopping.
2
Don't forget to carry some Japanese yen in cash as smaller shops, cafes and bars may not accept credit cards.

Sasebo (Miura), Japan

NasjonalspråkJapanese

Take a boat tour to the Kujukushima Islands, 208 emerald-green islands dotted along the coast, famous for their jagged shores. From the observatory decks on Mt. Ishidake or Mt. Hiyamizudake, enjoy panoramic views of the islands, mountains and bay. Then, explore the unique Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park, or stop in at the Kujukushima Aquarium to learn how to harvest pearls.
Reisetips
1
The port is in the center of town, and you won't have to walk far to find public transport or a taxi.
2
In Japan, it's considered rude to walk and eat: Stop and finish your food first if you pick up a snack from a street vendor.
3
You can only draw local currency from international ATMs commonly located in 7-11 or Lawson stores.

Busan, South Korea

NasjonalspråkKorean
Gyldig valutaSouth Korean Won
Get a sense of what South Korea looked like in 678 A.D. at the elaborate Beomeosa Temple — its three-story red pagoda is set at the edge of dramatic Mount Geumjeongsan. Then, head to Busan city center and stroll the white sands of Haeundae Beach. Alongside the shoreline, you'll find plenty of restaurants and shops — pop into a local bakery for eomuk, the crispy fish cake the region is famous for.
Reisetips
1
Cards are widely accepted, but foreign ATMs can only be reliably found in Family Mart convenience stores.
2
The street food can be a little overwhelming at first, but overcome your fears and dive in — in Korea, this is some of the best food around.

Hong Kong, China

NasjonalspråkEnglish, Chinese

Although it's officially part of China, Hong Kong is a world unto itself. This bustling city is full of ancient and modern architecture, lots of people and — of course — the best dim sum around. Head to the Kowloon Peninsula for Golden Mile shopping along Nathan Road. Then, make your way to Hong Kong Island to admire the views from the top of Victoria Peak — you can see the skyscrapers of the financial district as well as the fishing village of Stanley Harbour. Cruise to Hong Kong and trek out to mountainous Lantau Island to see the famous Tian Tan Buddha, standing a full 112 feet tall. Or score some quiet time at Hong Kong Park, full of contemplative rock gardens and tree-lined paths.
