For most of us, figuring out a budget is usually a central component to planning a family vacation. Years of orchestrating group getaways, however, have taught me that cruise vacations are one of the most cost-effective options out there when it comes to maximizing memories without breaking the bank.

One of my favorite cruise ships for an affordable escape is Grandeur of the Seas. Part of Royal Caribbean’s much-loved Vision Class, this mid-sized classic offers lots of included onboard activities, free dining options and nightly entertainment available at no additional cost to you. Because it’s a smaller, older ship, it also provides that laid-back, intimate vibe that I prefer on family vacations. Getting to know fellow cruisers is a breeze on this ship, and most of the activities onboard emphasize relaxation and connecting with your loved ones.

Whether you’re cruising with kids, adults, grandparents or any generation in between, you’ll find plenty of options that appeal to guests of all ages. Think a sports court with complimentary equipment rentals, a happening pool scene that hosts parties and events on a daily basis, a towering 40-foot rock-climbing wall that yields stunning views and so much more. 1. Post Up Poolside

I’ve said it a thousand times in my articles, and I’ll say it again — nothing beats spending a few hours poolside on any cruise ship, especially this one. The vibe at the pool onboard Grandeur of the Seas is chill in the morning, making it a great go-to spot to catch up on your reading or just enjoy the sunshine with your family. Linger throughout the day, though, and you’ll be treated to all kinds of fun events and activities, from bellyflop competitions to dance-offs and pool parties hosted by a talented DJ.

2. Retreat To The Solarium

If you’re cruising with other adults (or just want a little bit of alone time), you can grab a comfy lounge chair at the Solarium. This tranquil haven is open to guests aged 16 and older and features its own whirlpool and lagoon-like pool, plus plenty of space to unwind in the shade or the sunshine. It has its own bar, too, so you can indulge in your favorite vacation libations at any time during your visit. Like the main pool deck, admission to the Solarium is included at no additional cost.

3. Scale The Rock-Climbing Wall

One of my top things to do onboard any Royal Caribbean cruise ship is spend a few mornings or afternoons clambering to the top of the ship’s rock-climbing wall. Harnessing up and scaling to the summit is free for cruise guests, so you can come back as many times as you like throughout your getaway at no additional cost. It’s a great workout, too, and yields some of the best views from the ship.

4. Settle In For An Exhilarating Table Tennis Battle

One of the most exciting things to do onboard Grandeur of the Seas is — believe it or not — to watch a table tennis match. Competitions here can get intense, and watching them is free. It’s also free to play, just keep in mind that the competition can get fierce. Better bring your A-game if you’re thinking about facing off against seasoned cruisers.

5. Taste Your Way Around The World, One Vintage At A Time

If you’re a wine lover like me, you’ll want to check the Cruise Planner app for wine tastings taking place during your Grandeur of the Seas sailing. These complimentary tastings feature vintages from international vineyards — both iconic names and lesser-known producers, including some you can only get on Royal Caribbean sailings. Attending the tastings is free for cruise guests.

6. Live It Up During Themed Nights

You’ll also want to look out for any themed nights taking place during your cruise getaway. These can range from decades-inspired extravaganzas to masquerades and beyond. Sometimes they’ll be listed via your Cruise Planner app ahead of your sailing, allowing you to pack themed accessories and even costumes. If you don’t have anything other than your vacation wardrobe to wear, don’t worry — you’ll typically see performers handing out accessories and props to cruise guests during these super-fun onboard parties. The best part? Admission is free for cruise guests.

7. Savor Crave-Worthy Complimentary Flavors

While Grandeur of the Seas is home to several top-notch specialty restaurants, you can easily indulge in delicious meals at no additional cost throughout your escape. Some of the top free places to eat onboard include the buffet-style Windjammer, which features a rotating selection of international fare, and the casual Park Café, where you can snack on delicious deli sandwiches, steaming bowls of soup, crisp salads and decadent deserts. For an upscale, multi-course dinner that’s also included in your cruise fare, head to the main dining room. It’s the best formal dining onboard, and it won’t cost you a cent.

8. Enjoy A Night Out At The Theater

Royal Caribbean cruises are known for their incredible onboard entertainment, and every show onboard this beloved cruise ship is a total winner. Grandeur of the Seas hosts two spectacular musicals onboards. There’s Broadway Rhythm & Rhyme, a celebration of classic Broadway stage hits, and Tango Buenos Aires, a dazzling showcase of Argentina’s most iconic dance styles. The ship also hosts hilarious game shows for adults in the evenings, pop-up performances poolside and so much more, at no additional cost.

9. Join A Silent Disco

The Silent Party is one of the best free things to do onboard this cruise ship for guests aged 18 and up. Here, DJs battle it out during a clash of sets pumping through the airwaves into your headphones. Take them off, and you’ll be blown away by the sight of the crowd dancing in what seems to be total silence. Silent Parties onboard are free for cruise guests, and a great way to end the evening right.

10. Get Comfy During A Quiet Movie Night Outdoors

If you’re craving a more relaxed, low-key night at sea, you’ll love the ship’s free outdoor movie nights. They’re hosted on the pool deck, equipped with a huge projector screen where you can cozy up with loved ones and watch silver-screen classics and recent blockbuster hits. Just bring a towel and snuggle up in one of the deck’s many lounge chairs.
