A cruise can be a lively adventure filled with upbeat music, pool parties and socializing with fellow travelers, but it can just as easily be a quiet getaway. Imagine yourself sitting on a private balcony, watching the ocean drift by with nothing left to worry about or plan. Read on to find the right ship for your slower pace at sea.

The 5 Most Relaxing Ships for a Chill Cruise

When considering a quiet cruise, certain features make a real difference, such as adults-only public spaces, a spa with stress-relieving treatments and port stops in peaceful destinations. Check out the following Royal Caribbean ships to find the one that suits you.

1. Radiance of the Seas

Endless ocean views are to be found on Radiance of the Seas®, a midsize ship that’s part of the Royal Caribbean Radiance Class, a group of four ships built between 2001 and 2004. These are about half the size of the biggest Royal Caribbean ships and are characterized by a laid-back atmosphere, with a focus on open spaces, nature views and destinations rather than expansive entertainment zones and a wide variety of attractions.

Glass-lined interior spaces include the multi-story Centrum atrium with its glass elevators and ocean-facing sightlines, the Viking Crown Lounge with panoramic wraparound windows high above the ship and the adults-only Solarium beneath its retractable glass canopy. The Solarium, a climate-controlled pool and lounge area tucked away from the main pool decks, is a favorite feature for Royal Caribbean guests seeking a spa-like atmosphere and an adults-only space. On my last Royal Caribbean sailing, I spent a good bulk of my time there, enjoying the tranquil background music and healthy snacks while lounging by the pool.

2. Brilliance of the Seas

Brilliance of the Seas®, another Radiance Class ship with a reputation for relaxation, has many of the same features Radiance of the Seas does, being virtually identical in size and layout, both holding up to 2,140 passengers at standard double occupancy. However, while its sister ship tends to offer three-to-four day quick trips, Brilliance of the Seas boasts frequent longer itineraries to relaxing destinations and culturally focused sailings that add to its laid-back feel.

Many of this ship’s itineraries focus on scenic, slower-paced destinations that naturally encourage a more relaxed style of travel. It frequently sails to the Greek Isles and Mediterranean, visiting ports in Santorini, Mykonos, Croatia, Italy and Spain, where days revolve around waterfront cafés, historic streets, beach clubs and coastal scenery rather than high-energy attractions. Many nightlife options onboard even have a quiet quality, such as the cozy wine bar Vintages, with its dim lighting, tapas and wine flights.

3. Wonder of the Seas

Yes, it’s an Oasis Class ship, which is among the largest Royal Caribbean ships, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be quiet. I’m including Wonder of the Seas® primarily because of its serene spaces like Central Park, a lush, open-air neighborhood with more than 10,000 plants and flowers. Dedicated horticulturists are even on hand to answer all your questions about the tropical species you’ll spot on your rejuvenating time on the walking paths. Within Central Park are restaurants, bars, shops and even balcony staterooms overlooking the space. Dine on the terrace among the greenery at eateries including Giovanni’s℠ Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar.

Intentionally serene spaces include the ship’s walking and running track that circles the upper decks, plus the Vitality℠ Spa that includes an adults-only Thermal Suite featuring heated loungers, a steam room and sauna and therapeutic showers. If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, this ship is ideal for those seeking a mix of lively entertainment and calm corners.

4. Serenade of the Seas

Serenade of the Seas® stands out for its scenically driven itineraries and design. The ocean is constantly in view, as the Radiance Class ship was built with extensive floor-to-ceiling glass throughout its public spaces, creating an open, light-filled atmosphere connected to the places it sails to. Observation lounges and outdoor viewing areas allow you to bask in diverse landscapes from the comfort of the ship.

Plus, guests on Serenade of the Seas tend to be those looking for a low-key cruise. There are lots of couples and multigenerational families enjoying onboard activities like mini golf and poolside movie nights beneath the stars.

5. Rhapsody of the Seas

Rhapsody of the Seas® is a Vision Class ship that holds around 2,040 guests, on the smaller side for a Royal Caribbean ship. Its smaller footprint makes it quiet, calm and easy to move around the ship.

Frequent sailings include week-long Europe and Caribbean itineraries, which tend to attract travelers looking for a leisurely vacation at a relaxed pace, allowing for time to unwind in the Solarium and read on the open deck spaces.

Tips for Finding Quiet Places on Cruise Ships

Even on larger cruise ships, it’s possible to carve out peaceful spaces if you know where to look. Strategic choices while planning a cruise can make a major difference in how calm and restorative the overall experience feels. Here are some things to consider:

See your room as a sanctuary: Book a room with an ocean-facing balcony or splurge for a suite. Some suites come with additional perks such as private lounge areas and access to exclusive restaurants.
Seek out overlooked outdoor decks: Many ships have quieter promenades or tucked-away observation areas away from the main pool decks. These spaces are often nearly empty during the day, especially on sea days.
Use port days strategically: Staying on board while many passengers head ashore can completely transform the atmosphere of a ship. I did this once on a cruise and felt like I had the entire ship to myself, pools and fitness centers included.
Look for adults-only and garden-style spaces: Thermal suites and open-air neighborhoods like Central Park tend to offer calmer environments than family-focused activity zones.
Dine later in the evening: Restaurants and buffet venues usually feel much calmer after the peak early-evening rush, creating a more relaxed dining experience.
Avoid peak school-break sailings: Holiday weeks, spring break and midsummer family travel periods generally bring larger crowds. Longer itineraries and shoulder-season sailings often attract more adults looking for a slower pace.
Choose destination-focused itineraries and longer sailings: Scenic sailings to Alaska, the Mediterranean or the Southern Caribbean often naturally foster a more relaxed onboard rhythm. More days at sea means more time to unwind rather than rushing between attractions.

Plan a Quiet Cruise

There are many features of cruise vacations that make them conducive to relaxing. For one, there’s the fact that you don’t have to stress about unpacking your bags, getting around or paying for things once you’re on the ship. And, contrary to what some might assume, traveling with hundreds or even thousands of other people doesn’t have to be loud! Royal Caribbean ships have dedicated areas built for quiet moments.
