A muster station is a designated emergency assembly point on a cruise ship where passengers must report during safety drills or real emergencies. With Royal Caribbean, guests can complete drill preparation and execution on their own time thanks to the new EmusterTM technology, which brings the safety information guests need to their mobile device via the Royal Caribbean app and stateroom TV. Before the ship departs, every guest just needs to visit their assembly station, where the crew can verify they’ve completed the process. No more set time, no more large group assemblies. Here’s how it all works and your guide to sailing with confidence when you choose Royal Caribbean.
Cruisers, especially those traveling for the first time, often ask, “What is muster on a cruise?” A muster station is a designated emergency assembly point on the ship where passengers gather during safety drills or real emergencies. It’s where trained crew members guide guests through evacuation procedures and ensure everyone has access to essential safety equipment.
On the other hand, you’ll also be wondering, “What is a muster drill?” The muster (or safety) drill is a mandatory practice at the beginning of each cruise, designed to show guests where they should go in the unlikely event of an emergency. Drills include how to put on a life jacket and other safety measures. Muster drills are incredibly important, even when frequent cruisers view them as the least favorite part of the cruise experience.
That’s why Royal Caribbean has developed a new approach to this essential practice: Muster 2.0, also called the Guest Safety Briefing The new program reinvents the cruise industry’s standard safety drill with a process that’s more personal and promotes higher levels of safety. As informed by insights from international regulators, the U.S. Coast Guard and other maritime and government authorities, the app also meets all safety requirements.
Nick Weir, former Royal Caribbean Senior Vice President of Entertainment, was instrumental in developing Guest Safety Briefing. Learn directly from Weir with these five prominent pointers so that you’re prepped and fully ready to enjoy a smooth, stress-free and safe guest experience when you cruise.
Nick: The safety drill has always put a pause on the cruise experience, so we felt like it could be more efficient. When I was a cruise director, I was responsible for the welcome party held on the first day. I also had to make the announcements for the drill. It always brought all the fun to a halt right when things were getting going.
I happened to be outside on one hot, sweaty day during the drill, and I thought to myself, “Why not put it all on a device so it can be done individually and monitored?” Technology naturally played a big part. Location services on smartphones are essential, and a big team at Royal Caribbean came together to make it happen.
Nick: Guest Safety Briefing changes the experience entirely. Previously, the safety drill meant having crowds of people going to the same space at the same time. Some guests simply followed others as opposed to actively finding and learning where their assembly station is located.
Also, on each first day, guests are officially in vacation mode. We used to have to drive home all the safety information in a clunky, disruptive way. With this new program, guests can complete the process with more flexibility and speed. This leaves more time to visit the pool, hit up a bar for cocktails or surf on the FlowRider®.
What’s more, now going to your assembly station naturally integrates with exploring the ship. This notion is reaffirmed by the more than 95% positive response from guests who participated in the first trials on Symphony of the Seas® in January 2020.
Nick: The beauty of this new process is that guests can access everything they need right from their smartphone or the stateroom TV, and then complete the drill by checking in at their assembly station.
What Happens if Someone Forgets?
If someone forgets or hasn’t completed the process, they’ll get a reminder on their device. If it ever has to boil down to it, the relevant crew members make reminder announcements (there are no shortcuts when it comes to safety).
Understanding muster stations and the updated Guest Safety Briefing process gives every cruiser peace of mind from day one. This modern approach makes safety preparation faster, more intuitive and more comfortable, so guests can focus on enjoying unforgettable onboard experiences.
With support from international authorities and strong guest feedback, Guest Safety Briefing represents a meaningful step forward in cruise safety and convenience. By taking just a few minutes to complete the process, you’ll feel informed, confident and ready for the adventure ahead.
