10 Things to See & Do in Santorini's Capital

What is Fira Known For?

Fira is Santorini's vibrant capital, known for its caldera views, blue-domed churches, and some of the best dining, shopping, and nightlife on the island.

Published: June 26, 2026

Fira is the capital of Santorini and one of the island’s most famous clifftop towns, perched about 220 meters above the Aegean Sea on the rim of the volcanic caldera. It is also the island’s main hub, home to the cruise ship tender port, the central bus station, and the starting point for the hiking trail to Oia. Here are 10 things Fira is famous for.

1. Caldera Views

Fira’s position directly above the sunken volcanic crater delivers some of the most dramatic views in all of Greece: the deep blue Aegean, the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni, and sheer black and rust-red cliffs plunging hundreds of meters below. The caldera walkway stretches north toward the quieter neighborhoods of Firostefani and Imerovigli, and every step of it offers a different angle on the same breathtaking panorama.

2. The Three Bells of Fira

One of the most famous things Fira is known for is the Three Bells of Fira, a blue-domed Catholic church with three arched bells set against the open sky and caldera below. Formally known as the Catholic Church of the Dormition, the church dates back to 1757 and sits on the northern edge of Fira near Firostefani. Visit early in the morning, before the cruise crowds arrive, for the best chance at a clear photo.

3. The Fira to Oia Hiking Trail

Fira is the southern starting point of the 10-kilometer caldera trail to Oia, one of Santorini’s most famous walks. The route passes through Firostefani and Imerovigli, climbs past the ruins of Skaros Rock, a cliffside Venetian fortress, and rewards walkers with uninterrupted caldera views the entire way. The hike takes two to three hours at a steady pace.

4. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera

Located in central Fira, this museum houses artifacts from the ancient Minoan city of Akrotiri, a Bronze Age settlement buried by volcanic ash around 1600 BCE and often compared to Pompeii. Highlights include pottery, tools, and stunning painted frescoes depicting daily Minoan life, among the finest examples of Bronze Age art in the world.

5. The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral

Another sight Fira is known for is the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, a prominent whitewashed church at the center of the town’s pedestrian zone. The cathedral stands out for its tall bell tower, elegant arches and interior frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible. Entrance is free, it is open year-round, and the surrounding square is one of the most pleasant places in Fira to pause between sights.

6. Shopping and the Jewelry Quarter

Fira is Santorini’s main shopping destination, anchored by a jewelry quarter along the street leading from the cable car station into the town center, where local designers sell gold, silver, and pieces set with volcanic rock and Aegean stones. Beyond jewelry, the winding lanes hold boutiques selling Greek fashion, ceramics, leather goods, and locally produced wines and spirits.

7. Dining on the Caldera Edge

Fira has the island’s most diverse dining scene, from gyros shops and souvlaki stands on the main square to upscale caldera-view restaurants serving fresh seafood and contemporary Greek cuisine. Most restaurants carry a strong selection of local Assyrtiko whites and Vinsanto dessert wines from Santorini’s celebrated volcanic vineyards.

8. The Cable Car and Old Port

The cable car connects central Fira to the Old Port of Gialos, 220 meters below, in four minutes, with aerial views of the caldera the whole way down. From the port, boat tours depart daily to the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni for volcano hikes and a swim in the warm geothermal hot springs. The alternative is the 587-step staircase carved into the cliff face.

9. Nightlife

Fira is Santorini’s nightlife capital. Caldera-edge bars and clubs fill after dark with visitors drawn as much by the views as the drinks, and the main square buzzes with outdoor restaurants and live music well past midnight through the summer season.

10. Sunset Views

Oia gets the headlines for Santorini sunsets, but Fira delivers its own version with far fewer crowds. The caldera walkway and the clifftop bars of Firostefani both offer unobstructed westward views, and in late October and November the sun sets directly behind Nea Kameni, framing the volcanic island in golden light.
